چکیده

091301-1 Presented are details of the staged electron laser acceleration (STELLA) experiment, which demonstrated high-trapping efficiency and narrow energy spread in a staged laser-driven accelerator. Trapping efficiencies of up to 80% and energy spreads down to 0.36% (1 ) were demonstrated. The experiment validated an approach that may be suitable for the basic design of a laser-driven accelerator system. In this approach, a laser-driven modulator together with a chicane creates a train of microbunches spaced apart by the laser wavelength. These microbunches are sent into a second laser-driven accelerator designed to efficiently trap the microbunches in the ponderomotive potential well of the laser electric field while maintaining a narrow energy spread. The STELLA scientific apparatus and procedures are described in detail. In-depth comparisons between the data and model are given including the predicted energy spectrum, energy-phase plot, and microbunch length profile. Data and model comparisons as a function of the phase delay between the microbunches and the accelerating wave are presented. The model is exercised to reveal how the high-trapping efficiency process evolves during the acceleration process.

Efficient quasi-monoenergetic ion beams from laser-driven relativistic plasmas.

Table-top laser-plasma ion accelerators have many exciting applications, many of which require ion beams with simultaneous narrow energy spread and high conversion efficiency. However, achieving these requirements has been elusive. Here we report the experimental demonstration of laser-driven ion beams with narrow energy spread and energies up to 18 MeV per nucleon and ∼5% conversion efficiency...

Monoenergetic Electron Beams with Ultralow Normalized Emittance Generated from Laser-gas Interaction *

High quality electron bunches were generated by using 2 TW, 80 fs high contrast laser pulses interacting with helium gas targets. In optimized experimental condition, we got tens of MeV monoenergetic electron beams with small energy spread and the normalized emittance reaches 0.07π mm·mrad. Experimental and simulation results show that proper plasma densities make the injection more stable and ...

Conceptual Design for a 1-GeV IFEL Accelerator

A conceptual design for a multistaged 1-GeV IFEL laser-driven accelerator (laser linac) was developed using the Staged Electron Laser Acceleration (STELLA) inverse free electron laser (IFEL) model created at STI Optronics. A comparison with the UCLA TREDI model yields good agreement with the STELLA model. The 1-GeV IFEL laser linac consists of an IFEL buncher for forming microbunches and four I...

LBNL Report, LBNL-53510 Physics of Laser-Driven Plasma-Based Accelerators

The physics of plasma-based accelerators driven by short-pulse lasers is reviewed. This includes the laser wakefield accelerator, the plasma beat wave accelerator, the self-modulated laser wakefield accelerator, and plasma waves driven by multiple laser pulses. The properties of linear and nonlinear plasma waves are discussed, as well as electron acceleration in plasma waves. Methods for inject...
